Thailand is a Buddhist country and the healing arts of Thailand are intertwined with Buddha’s story. The founding father or saint of Thai medicine is Shivago Kumapaj ( Ruesi Jiwaka) who is mentioned in the Jakarta tales of Buddha’s life as Buddha’s doctor . After Buddha’s death as his great teaching spread throughout the Asian world traveling monks and healers passed on the healing techniques of India and Buddhist philosophy to local people. The local people in Thailand had their own healing techniques and over time the Indian Ayurvedic practices melded with the local Thai practices. The most effective of these practices became tradition. A tradition that has become Thai Massage and Bodywork today.
Traditionally the practitioners of the healing arts were Ruesi who were hermit sages. Their intention was to help people have a happier life and they devoted themselves to healing ailments. A Ruesi was an expert in massage, medicinal herbs and minerals, astrology and spiritual practice. This knowledge is Traditional Thai Medicine of which Traditional Thai Massage is a part.

Traditional Thai medicine has three branches which are Bodywork or massage, herbal medicine and nutrition, spiritual practice / shamanism.
Traditional Thai Massage works along ten energy lines (sen) the aim is to release energy blocks and balance the energy releasing stagnant wind energy that causes dis-ease.
All Asian healing systems have the philosophy on the idea that all forms of life depend on an intangible energy to sustain itself. This energy or life force is called Qi (Ki) , Chi or Prana and is in all living things. Without prana nothing would exist.
The vital energy circulates the body through energy channels called sen ( in Thailand), nadi or meridian. In Traditional Thai Massage we work on ten main sen lines. If the energy becomes stagnant due to a block dis-ease is caused. By compressing and releasing using many different techniques the blocks can be released and the stagnant energy will flow out of the body. The physical symptom or block is often an indication of an underlying problem which could be from the mental, emotional, physical or spiritual body.
In the west Traditional Thai massage is known for its yoga type stretches. These are only a small part of the work on the ten sen and are known in the west due to the restrictions of what is allowed to be taught in the massage schools in Thailand.
